Matthias Urban, our chief editor, says, I had my first slot track at the age of 9, a Carrera Universal and I have to admit, it's a cool toy for a boy, but, it is much better to have it when you are a grown-up boy. Having learned this, he purchased himself a non-digital Carrera Evolution set for his 40th birthday. For ten years he then collected parts for the track and cars before the permanent track was built in a kind of the Monza track layout and the ambience of Spa-Froncorchamps.
Over the years some 250 different slot cars, Ferrari only!, have been collected. Matthias says, the period before ten years was a good one for purchasing slot cars. Prices were reasonable and the range of offered cars was wide.
Today prices have gone up all over the market. Last week Matthias purchased his latest car, a 312 T4 in the livery of the Monaco GP in 1979 when driven by Gilles Villeneuve onn race #12. The car can be identified as Serial Number 039. The proportions of the car, made by Spanish company SRC, look very correct and it is very detailed. It has a massive magnet and sticks to the track like glue. The slider could been processed more professionel. The seller however suggested to keep it as a show case model because of the many daintily parts. No problem for Matthias as most of his cars have only ever received an engine test.
The car, that is available as the Jody Scheckter-version with #11 (S/N 040) as well is limited to 1,020 pieces. Prices vary between 60€ to 100€ at the moment on eBay.
We show you the car in today's Slide Show.
