After finishing the Monterey week, the Auction Companies come out publishing their results. And surprising is a term that is not stressed too much if we use it.
The five Auction Companies had a total of 60 Ferraris on offer. 82 % of those cars have found new owners. RM even was able to sell all Ferrari lots.
Beside a 348 ts and Testarossa mostly upscale cars left unsold. On the other hand 15 cars crossed the million Dollar barrier, #1639GT was the most expensive car at 11,275,000$. Bonhams’ cars more or less stayed within their estimate range whilst the cars at RM seemed to exceed these easily.
Care for a little taste of surprises? No surprise was the lot of 275 GTBs being present, those cars have become expensive and are something like buyers’ and vendors’ Darling these days. The price range of 1,000,000$ to 1,500,000$ looks to be fair actually as well as 1,500,000$ paid for an original Daytona Spider. Interestingly one of each model left unsold respectively.
No surprise as well has been the high numbers paid for the real historic Ferraris as the California Spider, the TdF, the 857 Sport and so on.
A surprise was the low result for the Berlinetta Boxers. Estimated by me and traded on the market for around 130,000$, both cars offered stayed remarkably below 100,000$.
What are you willing to pay for low miles? Obviously a lot. The 328 GTS and the Testarossa both showing a mileage below 300 miles achieved crazy results. Usually 328 GTS are between 35,000$ and 75,000$ for top cars, RM’s offer was locked in at 159,500$! The Testarossa, frequently traded between 55,000$ and 65,000$, topped at 264,000$! Even RM’s 360 Spider went at least 20 % higher to models that can be purchased these days.
The number of Dinos, the GTS especially, follows their increase in value. This already was detectable by watching the market and continued at the Monterey Auction. One of the cars left unsold and two GTS have been sold at prices that experts hardly can follow. It was always clear that an original “Chairs & Flairs” car had a premium of 20,000$ most recently and it was accepted that this premium had risen to 50,000$shortly before the auctions, but a premium of 200,000$ is out of the world. Dinos have achieved a higher value these days than Daytonas! Matthias Bartz, author of the “Dino Compendium”, rightly quotes that the prices achieved are a good sign for increasing values for properly restored cars, but even he was surprised of 467,500$ paid for #07908. While we thought this to be a one off we have been thought the opposite when Russo & Steele’s results were published. #04468 topped the Daytonas as well and was hammered at $363,000! The lowest price for a Dino has been 231,000$ this time! I remember the times well, when those cars have been offered as disliked Italian pre-owned cars in the 1980s for 9,000 Deutsch Marks and, believe me; it is only owed to youth that I do not hate me for missing the chance to by all 15 of them they had in stock with a local car dealer by then.
A brief communication with Mike Sheehan resulted in his statement that he still wonders why the value of the “McDonalds-Index”-Ferrari, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, is still below its hype-level in the late 1980s.
An air of celebrity might help to push the value of cars, like we have learned by the Steve McQueen cars recently. This obviously does not apply to Mondials. Neither the David Carradine-car nor the Brandon Wang-example made it over the usual Mondial redline.
