After the big 100th anniversary celebration, the "traditional work" continues with the 101st update.
So far, nothing unusual. The Factory has resumed its work, and we're seeing 1,254 new entries out of a total of 2,292 records in the database that have been touched. So, business as usual. No new models, no major surprises from Emilia-Romagna.
However, a storm has swept across the Atlantic, catching the scene off guard. Mecum, as an auction house, isn't exactly known for setting trends or, compared to RM/Sotheby's and Gooding Christie, auctioning top-of-the-line cars from our favourite brand. And now they've offered The Bachman Collection, featuring 46 barely driven Ferraris. The press was all over it. Martha and Phil Bachman amassed dozens of rare Ferraris over decades, with a particular fondness for Giallo Modena.
Phil Bachman passed away in August 2025, and Martha died earlier in February 2024. At the time of the purchase, the Bachman family decided to donate a portion of the total proceeds, exceeding $114 million, to the Phil and Martha Bachman Foundation. This may be a significant indicator for evaluating the achieved prices, because the results, even for models that—whatever that may mean for Ferrari—weren't from the top tier, were extremely unusual, even when considering the US tax deductibility of donations: a 328 GTB for $577,000, a Scuderia for $1.65 million, 246 GTS for $770,000 and $935,000, a 360 CS for $1.87 million, and an SA Aperta for $4.95 million are just a few examples. And they took the lots apart from the Bachman-collection with them.
We've just returned from Paris, and our discussions with experts, along with our own observations and assessments, have led us to the following evaluation of the results at Mecum:
We consider the auction largely a one-off event, primarily driven by the spirit of charity, which generated a wonderful result for the Phil and Martha Bachman Foundation.
However, and this was already hinted at, but received solid confirmation in Kissimmee and continued in Paris, Ferrari's modern supercars are currently taking the next step in terms of prices. Starting with the 288 GTO and the F40, the F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari are now galloping ahead.
That was an interesting first month with many impressions from Kissimmee, Scottsdale, and, of course, because we were there in person, Paris as well. Let's keep it going!
Until the next update, thank you for your continued support.
