Checking the own archives would definitely help. You will remember our comments on Michael Benner’s picture of the “M1”-Prototype that is currently on display at the Museo Ferrari-exhibition called "Ferrari Supercar – Tecnica, Design, Mito“. The full S/N of the car is F 140 M1 *95451*. This serial number belonged to a 348 Spider from 1992 livered in Rosso Corsa/Beige. Today the Prototipo is fit with an extended body that looks like a 348 tb-shell.
#95451 reminds in many details of #90865, the “M3”-prototype. Being a 348 tb when new, the car was transformed into the Enzo Ferrari-prototipo with full S/N F 140 M 3 *90865*. M3 was offered as Lot #130 on June, 28th 2005 at Sotheby’s Auction at Ferrari Maranello. The estimate range was €120.000-150.000 and the car was sold to an anonymous buyer for €195,000. The car was Factory-owned until the auction and Sotheby clearly pointed out that “M3” was one of three produced prototypes. Having identified “M1” and “M3” now, means, we are still searching for “M2”. Would this be another 348 as well?
M1 was fitted with a 360-engine and a longitudinally-placed gearbox. It was used for the Enzo concept-tests as well as for the development of the current V8-engine. M3 is fitted with a 6 litres central rear- and longitudinal-mounted V12 engine made of alloy. The oil cooling system was provided from the 360 Modena Challenge and M3 featured a F1-transmission. This prototype was fitted with 355 Challenge Brembo brakes, drive train and suspension. . The oil radiator is from the 550. The front parts of #90865 have been taken from the 348 whilst the rear is a mixture of elements provided by the 355 and the 360.
Despite of Sotheby’s catalogue description “Being a prototype, the car is not guaranteed by Ferrari; no warranty of roadworthiness is implied or given, and the car should not be registered for road use” the car showed up after the auction at various events, with a road registration on French plates. It was spotted frequently since 2006, last seen at the 2011 edition of Modena Track Days where it showed up without plates.
