AvD's Oldtimer Grand Prix is celebreating its 40th anniversary this weekend.
For those around on the continent the predicted weather conditions are perfect for this year's OGP. It was launched in 1973 with its first edition, called "Nürburgring-Show '73". Initiated by Hubertus Graf Dönhoff, it first was intended to be an alternative to track days abroad like the GP de l'Age d'Or in France. There was no existing structure for Oldtimer-races at those days in Germany.

Teaming up with the Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD) and its president and racer Huschke von Hanstein, von Dönhoff who was a racer as well and temporary Porsche's race director, they wrapped their wish to compete into a Motorshow that is still existing today.

Beside many private racers, historic works racers will be present to race 13 different classes. This always is a wonderful occasion to watch some of the real historic Ferraris entered there.

In the past, Ferrari was present with a catering tent and a point of sale for merchandise. This led to high participation rates of owners “clubbing” around those tents. These days are gone since 2009 when the Factory decided not to be present at OGP anymore, today approx. 60 Cavallinos show up instead of more than 300 cars in the past. FCD, the Ferrari Club Germany, has taken the painful quest to provide some substitute to the good old days.

However, OGP will deserve a visit. It is starting on Friday for a three day meeting at the Nürburgring.
