A rare opportunity will be available at RM’s Auction during the Monterey Car Week in August. One of only ten original NART Spiders is one of the lots on offer. American main dealer Luigi Chinetti was not satisfied with the design of the 275 GTS and he addressed Enzo Ferrari and Sergio Scaglietti with the idea to build a few cut version built on the actual Berlinetta, the 275 GTB/4. Chinetti’s original plan was a small production of 25 cars , but reality had it that with chassis numbers 09437, 09751, 10139, 10219, 10249, 10453, 10691, 10709, 10749, and 11057 only ten examples were built finally.

9437 was the first NART Spider, produced in January of 1967. It was repainted from Giallo Solare –the colour it wears again today- to Marrone and appeared in the movie "The Thomas Crown Affair". 9751 was sold new in April 1967 to Alfred Erwin Goldschmidt, the son of German banker Jakob Goldschmidt, who fled the Nazis in 1933 to the US. 10139 went new to John H. McGeary of Miami. Sold new to Benjamin Gould the fourth Spider later went to Ralph Lauren’s Collection. It was not part of the exhibition of some of his cars in Paris last year. George Lamberson purchased #10249 when new and was still owned by his widow in the 1990s. Steve McQueen was probably the most famous first owner of a NART Spider. He purchased #10453 that later went to famous collector Anthony Wang of Long Island. The 7th car was sold to Donald W. Rose of Chappaqua in January 1968 and is owned by Larry Carter of Los Gatos already since 2000. 10709 started its life in Grey met. and was first owned by E.C. "Eddie" Smith of Lexington. #10749 is one of the few that went outside the US later, sold new to Dr. Michael Serman of Rye it is owned by Britain Clive Beecham. The final on, #11057, is believed to be the only example that was sold new to a European customer in Spain. Famous collector Albert Obrispurchased the car at a Coys of Kensington-Auction. 9437 and 10749 have both been present at the Factory’s 60th Anniversary celebration at Fiorano in 2007.
We would be surprised if the car offered at RM will sell for less than 7 mio. US$.
