Oh no, no criticism, just the sight... disturbing. Imagine how we all collect. We humans are made for it and are celebrated for it when we can let it go - although, it's fun, isn't it?
Rudi Klein from Los Angeles is a very special collector who hasn't made his collection public and whose existence is surrounded by rumors and myths. But it does exist! And who, if not our friends at RM Sotheby's, are in a position to offer this collection, although you almost wish - as with every collection - that everything stays as it is.
What is so special about Rudi Klein's collection? First, the sad side of the story. Rudi is no longer alive, he died in 2001. He was a trained butcher and owned a 16,000 square meter junkyard in Los Angeles and he collected exactly what belongs there: junk cars.
Well, there are a few of them, famous ones like the one in Switzerland, less famous ones but still in operation, scattered all over the world. We deal with their offers every day because cars from our favorite brand sometimes fall victim to everyday life.
Back to Rudi. For more than 40 years he bought crashed cars and their parts at auctions, stored them and then let time settle on them. But Rudi didn't buy just any junk, he bought divine junk! Carraciola's gullwing? In a rare aluminum body, the only one in black. Miuras, one of the most beautiful cars ever built, are available in three versions. Porsches? Endless. And Ferraris.
Only a few, and, with the exception of the Gabbone, probably impossible to revive. See for yourself. Thanks to the kind support of RM Sotheby's, it's possible.
It will be interesting to see what the bidders do with it. Too bad it will lead to the end of the morbid beauty in its entirety and existence. Goddbye, Junk Yard!
